Passport Advantage
Most IBM software is licensed through Passport Advantage. Metrics depend on the product: Processor Value Units, Authorized Users, Resource Value Units, Virtual Processor Cores. Each metric has a compliance implication, and mixing them across a portfolio is how organizations lose the plot. Guild Systems keeps the entitlement record honest and looks for consolidation and sub-capacity before you buy another drawer of PVUs.
Sub-capacity and ILMT
Sub-capacity lets eligible products be licensed on virtual processor cores assigned to a VM rather than full physical capacity — 40–70% savings is not unusual in virtualized estates. The catch is ILMT: it must be installed, configured, and producing quarterly reports. Fail that, and IBM can charge full capacity. That finding is common. We treat ILMT as production infrastructure, not a spreadsheet sidecar.
Audits
IBM audits through Software Asset Management. A prepared organization has current ILMT data, Passport Advantage Online that matches reality, and deployment records (version, edition, host). Organizations that lack that documentation meet true-up invoices that can run to seven figures. We do readiness assessments and we stay in the room if IBM has already written.
Renewals, S&S, and bundles
Passport Advantage renews annually and includes Subscription & Support. Lapsing S&S on a product you believe is retired is a classic way to create a compliance gap when the binary is still deployed. Partner Plus resellers can see upcoming renewals, end-of-support, and Cloud Pak bundle math that is usually better than buying products one at a time. We do that as part of the reseller relationship, not as a separate SAM project.
